6 Weeks Pregnant

The embryo is still changing faster than you can imagine. The facial features, such as the eyes and ears are now forming. The larynx and inner ear also form this week. It looks like a tadpole and it measures roughly ¼ inch long. Though it is smaller than a grain of rice, it is now a recognizable form with visible limbs.

Hormonal Changes

As your hormone level raises you will most likely experience erratic mood swings that are beyond your control. You will be more irritable than usual and the common complaints of pregnancy will be in full force. Nausea worsens this week due to the rise in hormones. Smells tend to make women queasy during this stage. Your breasts may have a tingling sensation and your areola will darken. You body continues to change to provide a safe and nurturing environment for you baby. Keeping in mind that your body is meeting your baby’s needs may help you tolerate the temporary discomforts of pregnancy.

Pregnancy Weight

Each and every pregnancy is different and so is the weight gain that accompanies each one. Food cravings may occur this week. Don’t be surprised if you start gaining a little weight early in your pregnancy. Women typically gain between two and five pounds during their first trimester. Your focus should remain on healthy food choices and safe exercises.

It is equally important to have regular checkups throughout your pregnancy to make sure you are gaining at a safe rate. Pre-eclampsia is a condition that can be detected early on by a sharp increase in your weight. If you have this condition it is possible that your baby will suffer from a lack of oxygen and blood-flow. When detected early it can be treated before it becomes a real danger.
