8 Weeks Pregnant
The baby’s structure continues to develop during the eight week. Fingers and
toes begin to appear and facial development continues. The baby’s bottom and
brain are now clearly visible, as well as the elbows. The tiny bones throughout
your baby’s body start to harden. The tail disappears and fingers and toes come
along. The baby is growing in overall size and now measures the approximate
length of a grape.
Fluttering
This week also marks an exciting moment, especially for first time mothers.
Through an ultrasound you will be able to you’re your baby’s fluttering
heartbeat. This if often the first sign a mother gets that her baby is really
in her belly and is progressing well. It is a living, throbbing embryo. It’s
amazing that something the size of a grape can be so complex and able to
function. As the baby continues to develop, you may also use the rate at which
its heart beats to tell its gender.
Embryo to Fetus
This is the last week we will refer to you baby as an embryo. The ninth week
marks the beginning of the fetal stage and we will refer to it as a fetus. Each
day the embryo looks more defined and takes on more characteristic of a newborn
baby.
Body Changes
The baby isn’t the only one going through major changes. Your uterus will
finally start to swell. Though most people won’t notice you are with child yet,
your clothes may get tight around the waist at this time. Your body will change
and adapt to meet the needs of your baby. You may feel swollen and tend to
retain fluids from this point on, as well. Drinking plenty of water will help
to manage this. Staying off of your feet when possible will also help.
