ouch, painful periods!

Hi ladies, I'm having really painful periods.
I've heard that birth control pills can help immensely, and will also make your periods more regular, but I want to try natural remedies. Do you know of any really effective remedies that are easy to make or get a hold of? The hot water bottle is just not cutting it.
