The Origins of the Duane Reade Pharmacy

The first full-service Duane Reade drugstore was established in 1960. The store was located in Manhattan on Broadway between Duane Street and Reade Street, and was therefore named accordingly by it's employees. Health and beauty products made up the bulk of Duane Reade's merchandise, and there was less emphasis on pharmaceuticals. Things have taken a turn in the opposite direction since then. Today, Duane Reade is the fastest growing drugstore chain in the United States.

Duane Reade Pharmacies are helping to revolutionize the way we get prescriptions filled through new Duane Reade DR Express Pharmacy kiosks. Each kiosk is equipped with a scanner that images prescriptions, and a touch-screen monitor. The kiosks are also fitted with web cameras, allowing customers to speak with pharmacists in a way that is more personal than a telephone conversation. Duane Reade started this program by installing 60 kiosks in hospitals and offices throughout the metropolitan area. Once a prescription is filled, refilled, or transferred through a kiosk, it can be picked up at any Duane Reade location, and the standard two visits to the pharmacy are cut down to one. With it's popularity and innovative use of technology, Duane Reade Pharmacies are on the cutting edge.
