Fatigue and Headache
According to the American Council for Headache Education, almost 90% of men and
95% of women experienced one or more headaches last year. The effects of
headaches can be devastating not only for the physical pain that they cause
individual sufferers, but because of the disruption that they cause in
relationships at home, the financial implications of money used to treat
headaches that could be utilized elsewhere, and the loss of productivity at
work.
What is a Headache?
Scientists are still working on this one. The trigeminal nerve, the largest
nerve in the head, is thought to start a chain reaction that results in the
release of serotonin, which helps control, for want of better words, being
overloaded with signals. However, if you are having a headache, you may not be
making enough serotonin to kill off pain inputs. While constriction and
dilation of blood vessels and muscle contractions are still considered to be a
big part of the puzzle, scientists continue to look for the exact causes and
origin of headaches.
Types of Headaches
Primary headaches account for the vast majority of headaches, including the
tension and migraine types. Other primary headaches are cluster headaches,
usually suffered by men, and rebound headaches, caused by the misuse of
over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Secondary headaches are caused by other
medical conditions, such as fever, meningitis, or tumors.
Causes
Headaches can be triggered, or caused, by many different things. Allergies,
sinus infections, and changes in weather can trigger headaches. Women can
suffer headaches when they have fluctuations in hormone levels. Stress,
anxiety, and depression have a hand in creating that ache in your head. Noise,
alcohol, and caffeine can also be culprits.
Fatigue and Headaches
Fatigue is both a cause and an aftereffect of a headache. The struggle to stay
awake and concentrate can set off that horrible pounding sensation. Eye strain
may start a headache. Sleep disorders are triggers. And, having a headache can
make you incredibly tired. Sometimes, sleep is the only way to escape the pain.
