How To Get Rid Of Stretch Marks
Stretch marks defined
Stretch marks are fine lines or streaks on the skin caused by it being forced to
stretch beyond its limits. The cause of these marks lies beneath the surface.
When the skin expands in such a way, collagen production is disrupted and tiny
tears are created. What we see on the surface is something akin to scar tissue.
Pregnant women, body builders, young people going through puberty, and anyone
who has either gained or lost and extreme amounts of weight can get stretch
marks.
So, you want to get rid of stretch marks
Stretch marks can make you feel self-conscious in a bathing suit or wearing
other revealing clothing. Luckily, in many cases, over time, they fade to such
a degree that they are barely noticeable. However, for many people, they are
just plain bothersome and they want to get rid of them. Sadly, outside of the
complete removal of the affected skin, most remedies will not completely erase
them. At best, a good fading can be expected.
Methods to help remove stretch marks
There are many methods to help remove them. They are listed below.
Creams and lotions – The verdict is still out on the effectiveness of
most creams and lotions. It should be noted that they are the least expensive
method and it can be done in the privacy of your own home. However, usually the
most that can be hoped for is to have the marks fade until they are barely
noticeable. Some doctors encourage the use of creams containing retinoids and
alphahydroxy acids. This is because there is some scientific evidence that says
they can stimulate the generation of collagen, which helps create supple and
elastic skin.
**Do not use any cream containing retinoids or steroids such as hydrocortisone
while you are pregnant.
Tummy tuck – This may be a bit extreme for many people, but it is 100%
effective. For many new mothers with excess stretch marked skin below the
navel, this procedure may solve two problems at once. When the excess skin is
trimmed to create a sleeker silhouette, the stretch marks are also completely
removed. In exchange, a small incision scar is left behind. It is required to
perform the procedure. This is a very painful and costly method.
Chemical peels and micro-dermabrasion – Both of these methods are only
effective if the stretch marks are very superficial. Both chemical peels and
micro-dermabrasion remove only the top layer of the skin so that a new outer
layer may grow in its place. If stretch marks go deeper, and in most cases they
do, this is not only painful, it can also be a waste of money
