Healthy Eating Habits
Not sure how to start eating healthy--and stay that way? Like most activities,
eating healthy has to become a habit; a natural part of your day that you
eventually don't have to give a whole bunch of thought to. With support from
family members, friends, and personal dedication, you can start eating healthy
sooner than you think--and the habit will last permanently if you're willing to
work at it. Here are some suggestions that may help.
Make a Grocery List
Since you have to go grocery shopping every week or so, make sure that you make
a list, so that you know what you need and how long each food item should last.
And, while you're compiling your list, add a couple of healthy foods that you
don't usually purchase. If you make a list ahead of time, you'll be more likely
to get the items on the list, because you won't have to give it a second
thought. And, once you buy a fruit, vegetable, or grain that you don't usually
eat, you'll be much more likely to find things to do with the foods you've
purchased. Every time you go shopping, add a new healthy item to your list, and
leave the items you've already added on your list. After a while, you may take
some of the foods that are high in fat, cholesterol, and sodium off your list
to make room for more healthy items.
Snack Smart
Most people carry a snack with them to work or school, to be eaten in between
breakfast and lunch, or lunch and dinner. A lot of people also take advantage
of the snacks that the vending machine or employee lounge has to offer, and
this is not always a healthy choice. While there's nothing wrong with snacking
in the middle of the day, make sure that you're eating the right things
throughout the day, so that you can keep a balanced diet. After all, if you've
already had doughnuts and pastries at work, it's not a good idea to have cake
or cookies for dessert at home. Remember, eating healthily doesn't necessarily
mean that you have to eat less, you just have to eat less of the things that
aren't so good for you. To get yourself in the habit of snacking healthily,
select fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts that you like, so that you won't fee
like eating healthy is a chore. You'll find that you have a lot more energy at
work, and you'll concentrate better, too.
Schedule Eating Times
One of the best ways to get your body in the routine of following a healthy
diet is to schedule your meals. You may not always be able to eat at the exact
time in your schedule, but making sure that you know the time of day you want
to consume meals in helps you to make eating healthy a habit, and it helps you
to prepare and plan your meals better. Try not to eat too late at night, since
this may interfere with how soundly you sleep, and be sure to include breakfast
in your daily routine to give your body a jump start for the day. After
following a meal schedule, carrying the right snacks with you during the day,
and shopping for the right foods, you'll be in the habit of eating healthy in
no time at all.
