Pregnant With Twins

Discovering that you are pregnant with twins can be a time of mixed emotions. Women who planned on having a large family may consider multiple babies a treat. On the other hand, multiple babies may leave some mothers nervous and uncertain about the future. Proper nutrition is important when carrying one baby; however, expecting mothers need to be especially conscious of their food intake when pregnant with twins. Consuming an insufficient amount of foods may result in one of the babies not receiving an adequate supply of nutrients.

“Eating for Three”

The concept of “eating for two,” has resulted in many women overeating during their pregnancy. Overeating leads to a noticeable increase in weight gain. However, consuming an additional 300 calories a day will provide babies with an adequate amount of nutrients. Mothers who are pregnant with twins should increase their calorie intake by 600 a day. This ensures that both mother and babies are maintaining a healthy diet. Prenatal vitamins are also ideal because they reduce the risk of birth defects.

Drink Plenty of Water

When pregnant with twins, expecting mothers should also increase their water intake. Obstetricians have concluded that dehydration increases the risk of false labor pains, and early labor. Expecting mothers who consume an adequate amount of water will likely carry their babies to full term, with little complications. The recommended water intake for mothers expecting twins is two quarts a day.

Lifestyle Changes

Women who are pregnant with twins may have to make some lifestyle modifications as they near the end of the pregnancy. Sometimes the increased pressure and weight of carrying two babies cause extreme fatigue and back pain. After examining a mothers overall health, obstetricians will likely make recommendations when it comes to strenuous activities. Some mothers may be able to continue working or engaging in mild exercises, whereas others may require bed rest during their final weeks.
