Signs of Pregnancy
While the classic symptom of pregnancy is that hallmark missed period, there are
also signs of pregnancy that make themselves known before then. These signs of
pregnancy can vary from woman to woman, and not every woman will experience the
same symptoms. Likewise, the existence of one or more signs of pregnancy does
not definitively mean a pregnancy is underway.
Classic signs of early pregnancy
Along with the well known missed period, other early signs of pregnancy include
such things as tender breasts, nausea (especially in the morning), general
fatigue, frequent need to urinate, headaches, spotting, light headedness,
heartburn and constipation.
What do these signs of pregnancy mean?
While things like breast tenderness, heartburn and nausea can be signs of
pregnancy, it is important to remember that many conditions unrelated to
pregnancy can cause the same symptoms. For instance, heartburn can be caused by
a wide variety of gastrointestinal problems, and even by stress. The same goes
for nausea, fatigue, frequently urination and all the other symptoms of early
pregnancy. Even a missed period can be caused by other conditions.
What to do if pregnancy is suspected
If any or all of the above signs of pregnancy are present, or if a pregnancy is
suspected, it is important to have an accurate pregnancy test performed. There
are a number of excellent home pregnancy tests on the market, and these tests
allow women to find out if they are pregnant in complete privacy and
confidentiality. It is important to remember, however, that no test is 100%
accurate. When using home pregnancy tests, it is always advisable to take the
test at least twice to verify the results. Even if the results are verified
with a home pregnancy test, it is a good idea to have a professional test done
by your family doctor or gynecologist as well.
The importance of medical care before and during pregnancy
It is hard to overestimate the importance of proper medical care both before and
after pregnancy. Proper prenatal and pre-pregnancy care is important to the
well-being of both mother and child. So if you suspect a pregnancy, or if you
are planning to get pregnant, be sure to consult your family doctor for advice.
